Princess and the Pea: Pom Pom Peas

5 images showing the stages of making green pom pom peas.

You will need:

  • cardboard (a postal packet is perfect!)
  • green wool
  • scissors
  • googly eyes
  • glue
  • paper plate
  • green paint or pens
  • stapler

Making Instructions:

  1. To make the pompom template, draw a rectangle 15cm x 4cm on card. Draw a slit in the middle 9cm x 1cm as shown. Cut out.
  2. Wrap the wool around the template.
  3. Cut a 20cm-length piece of wool, thread it through the slit and tie firmly around the middle of the wrapped yarn.
  4. Slide the tied wrapped yarn off the template and tie it again tightly to secure. Cut the looped ends.
  5. Tidy up the pompom by trimming it. Glue on googly eyes.
  6. To make a pea pod, paint (or colour) one or both sides of the paper plate. Leave to dry. Fold the plate in half. Staple the folded corners together along the edges about 2cm from the centre fold. This will allow the plate to remain folded but leaves an opening big enough to pop your pompom peas in.

Rumpelstiltskin: Yarn-Wrapped Letters

5 images showing the different stages of making yarn wrapped letters.

You will need:

  • cardboard
  • marker
  • scissors
  • paint
  • yarn/wool
  • sticky tape (optional)

Making Instructions:

  1. Draw your letters on a sturdy piece of cardboard using a marker. Cut them out.
  2. Paint the cardboard letter.
  3. Cut lengths of yarn approximately 80cm long. To get started, tie the yarn around the shape and knot. When you’ve finished wrapping the yarn length, either tie the loose end around another yarn loop at the back or use sticky tape to secure.
  4. Continue wrapping yarn around until the letter is covered.
  5. Cut a 30cm length of yarn. Thread it through several strands of wrapped yarn at the top of your letter. Tie the loose ends to form a loop. Use this loop to hang up the letter on your bedroom door!

The Giant Turnip: Paper Plate Vegetable Garden

5 images showing the different stages of making a cardboard vegetable garden.

You will need:

  • paper plate
  • card (back of a cereal packet is ideal)
  • brown, blue, green, purple and white paint or felt pens/crayons
  • paintbrush
  • holepunch
  • brown wool
  • scissors
  • sticky tape

Making Instructions:

  1. Paint half of the paper plate blue and the other half brown.
  2. Punch holes around the outer edge of the brown half.
  3. Cut several lengths of brown wool about 70-90cm long. Secure one end of the wool to the back of the plate with sticky tape. Wrap sticky tape (about 4cm) around the other end to make it easier to thread through the holes.
  4. Thread the wool through the holes. Once the length is finished, stick it to the back of the plate and repeat.
  5. Draw a turnip on the card as shown (about 15cm long) and cut out. Paint or colour in. I used green for the turnip leaves and purple and white stripes for the turnip.
