Poems are like glorious bite-sized stories, full of wonderful rhyme, rhythm and language patterns, as well as conveying thoughts and emotions.
We always feel something when we read a poem, don't we?
They build reading, speaking and listening skills, inspire writing, encourage creative thinking and encourage us to imagine new worlds and experiences.
I've chosen simple and short poems which are wonderful to share and read out loud with children which is when poetry really becomes alive.
Each month I'll be adding a new poem to this blog. I hope you enjoy them!

One Winter Evening by Shirley Hughes
One winter evening, time for bed,
One winter evening late,
We heard a bird with a breast of red
Sing by the garden gate.
He cocked his head with its bright black eye
And sang in the still damp air,
And a star came out in a pale yellow sky
And silently twinkled there.

Pencil and Paint by Eleanor Farjeon
Winter has a pencil
For pictures clear and neat,
She traces the black tree-tops
Upon a snowy sheet.
But autumn has a palette
And a painting-brush instead,
And daubs the leaves for pleasure
With yellow, brown, and red.

In The Dark, Dark Wood by Anon
In the dark, dark wood, there was a dark, dark house,
And in that dark, dark house, there was a dark, dark, room,
And in that dark, dark room, there was a dark, dark cupboard,
And in that dark, dark cupboard, there was a dark, dark shelf,
And on that dark, dark shelf, there was a dark, dark box,
And in that dark, dark box, there was a GHOST!

The Farmyard by A.A. Atwood
One black horse standing by the gate,
Two plump cats eating from a plate;
Three big goats kicking up their heels,
Four pink pigs full of grunts and squeals;
Five white cows coming slowly home,
Six small chicks starting off to roam;
Seven fine doves perched upon the shed,
Eight grey geese eager to be fed;
Nine young lambs full of frisky fun,
Ten brown bees buzzing in the sun.

We Have A Little Garden by Beatrix Potter
We have a little garden,
A garden of our own,
And every day we water there
The seeds that we have sown.
We love our little garden,
And tend it with such care,
You will not find a faded leaf
Or blighted blossom there.

My Treasures by Kate Wakeling
These are treasures that I keep,
I hold them close before I sleep.
A silver coin,
a twisty shell,
a leaf that has a lovely smell,
a birthday badge,
an apple pip,
a very shiny paperclip,
an acorn cup,
a curly straw,
the key to a forgotten door.
These are treasures that I found,
I keep them safe,
I keep them sound.

Take A Deep Breath by Joseph Coelho
Close your eyes,
imagine the sea.
Take a deep breath...
and let it out.
Close your eyes,
imagine the waves splashing your feet.
Take a deep breath...
and let it out.
Close your eyes,
imagine your toes in the sand.
Take a deep breath...
and let it out.
Close your eyes,
imagine the sun on your face.
Take a deep breath...
and let it out.

The Grass House by Shirley Hughes
The grass house
Is my private place.
Nobody can see me
In the grass house.
Feathery plumes
Meet over my head.
Down here,
In the green, there are:
Seeds
Weeds
Stalks
Pods
And tiny little flowers.
Only the cat
And some busy, hurrying ants
Know where my grass house is.
