Find out how to make Oobleck with this simple recipe and step-by-step instructions. Oobleck is a special type of fun gooey slime which is both a semi solid and a liquid depending on how you play with it. It's fantastic for sensory play as well as a being a fascinating science experiment.
Oobleck gets its name from the book by Dr Seuss, called 'Bartholomew and the Oobleck'. In the book, the king is frustrated with the regular weather - rain in spring, sun in summer, fog in autumn and snow in winter. He summons his royal magicians to conjure up something new and different to fall from the sky. The magicians set to work and create a sticky green substance which is called Oobleck!
Food Colouring:
You don't have to add food colouring to Oobleck but I think it looks more exciting and fun to play with if it's a bright colour.
Why not make a 'themed' Oobleck, such as orange or green for Hallowe'en, red or green for Christmas, blue for a sealife-theme and so on? Add some washable small world toys for some great imaginative play too!
You will need:
- 1½ cups cornflour/cornstarch
- ¾ water
- food colouring (optional)
Tip: Use the same measuring cup for the cornflour and water to make sure that the quantities are accurate and you get the best balance.
If you want to make a larger quantity then simply keep the ratio and double or triple the ingredients.
How to make Oobleck:
- Put the cornflour/cornstarch in a mixing bowl and gently add the water.
- Add some food colouring and carefully mix everything together until the mixture is well combined.
I added some little glow-in-the-dark stars for a Hallowe'en feel.
