Make your own Butterfly Feeder

Make your own Butterfly Feeder

Make your own Butterfly Feeder

This diy butterfly feeder is a wonderful summer craft activity for children. It’s simple and fun to make and a lovely way of engaging children with nature and learning about butterflies. It also uses recycling materials so even better for our planet.

Although the main butterfly season is in the summer, you can still use your butterfly feeder throughout autumn. At this time, food is scarcer and some common garden butterflies can be seen all year round.

You will need:

  • Plastic lids, such as the tops of yoghurt pots
  • ribbon or string - you'll need approximately 4 x 45-cm lengths
  • beads
  • hole punch
  • overripe fruit!

TIP: Put your diy butterfly feeder in a warm and sheltered spot to create the best chances of butterflies landing on your feeder. They don't really like wet or windy weather so check the forecast for when it's warmer and sunny.

Small slices of overripe fruit like oranges, bananas, berries, pineapple, melon, pears and plums is ideal. Mashed banana works really well.

How to make:

2 images showing a hole punch making holes in a yoghurt pot lid and a hand threading a length of string through the hole.
  • Punch 4 holes in the yoghurt pot lid. The holes need to be evenly spaced apart so the feeder hangs straight.
  • Thread a 45-cm length of ribbon or string through each hole and tie securely.
2 images showing sticky tape wrapped around the end of a length of string and colourful beads threaded through the length of string.
  • Wrap a short piece of sticky tape around the end of the ribbon or string to make it easier to thread the beads.
  • Decorate your butterfly feeder by threading colourful beads through each length.
2 images showing the 4 lengths of string tied together and blackberries placed on the butterfly feeder.
  • Once you have finished threading the beads, bring the 4 ends to the top and tie them all together.
  • Hang up your butterfly feeder in a sunny spot out of the wind and add a few small pieces of overripe fruit.
