Let's go on a Woodland Scavenger Hunt!

You will need:

  • printer
  • A4 paper
  • Woodland scavenger hunt download
  • clipboard or glue the scavenger hunt on to cardboard
  • pens/colouring pencils

I've created 2 versions of the woodland scavenger hunt. Both versions have 15 boxes with the name of the item to spot inside each box, for example, 'pine cone', 'ladybird' and 'moss'.

In the first version, I've included outline drawings of the items. This will help younger children who can't yet read and also creates a fun colouring activity. They could, for example, colour in the items as they spot them or do so beforehand or at the end of the hunt! I've included a small circle at the top of each box for children to tick as they spot each item too.

In the second version, I've left the boxes blank. Older children may prefer to draw the items themselves as they spot them.

You could also make a pair of toilet roll binoculars (Activity #2) beforehand to help you spot everything!

It's a good idea to attach the scavenger hunt to a clipboard or if you don't have one, stick it to some cardboard. This makes it easy to hold and draw on.

Set a Time Limit

Think about timing the scavenger hunt to make it more exciting, allowing children enough time to spot everything but not go on too long so they lose interest.

And finally, why not pair the scavenger hunt with a picnic too and make a day of it? These animal paw print biscuits would also make an ideal snack to take!

Wishing you a fun time in the woods spotting nature!
